In the past few days, the formation of nonprofit OpenAI has shone a spotlight on ethical AI research. OpenAI will “advance digital intelligence in the way that is most likely to benefit humanity as a whole,” according to their mission statement.
MIRI (Machine Intelligence Research Institute) is a research nonprofit with a similar goal. Jed McCaleb, cofounder of Stellar, recently wrote an inspiring piece about why nonprofit ethical AI research matters:
For humanity’s benefit, we need to guarantee that AI systems can reliably pursue goals that are aligned with society’s human values. If organizations like MIRI are able to help engineer this level of technological advancement and awareness in AI systems, imagine the endless possibilities of how it can help improve our world.
